Scoil Mhuire Senior’s Hour of Code
Friday 12th December saw Scoil Mhuire Senior host a highly successful International Hour of Code. Mayor Fiona O’Loughlin attended and spoke about how Scoil Mhuire Senior was doing an excellent job in teaching ICT and promoting job opportunities in that industry. She also witnessed first-hand some of the exciting digital events going on that day. The small hall was our venue for different classes to come out and log on for their Hour of Code. They created Angry Bird games and helped Elsa from Frozen skate in snowflake patterns on our school set of iPads. 6th class students who have been studying Scratch moved from class to class throughout the day to demonstrate their knowledge of programming to the other younger students. A pin could be heard drop in Scoil Mhuire that day as students focused intently on their tasks and we look forward to creating more opportunities for our students to move forward in this digital age.
Scratch Pilot Scheme (Programming)
Here in the Senior School we have years of experience in teaching IT. In previous years we have focused on iMovies, garage band and other educational apps including tutorials in Podcasting and how to portray yourself positively on the internet. This year an exciting new venture has been taking place. A number of PLC students from the Community College have given freely of their time to tutor two of our 6th classes in Scratch programming over 8 weeks. The 6th classes have created amazing programmes and shown a keen interest in programming. We look forward to extending this programme to our other two 6th classes in the New Year.
