Safer Internet Day
February 9th 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you so much for all the positive and kind responses to our Remote Learning survey so far. The staff were so grateful to read your lovely messages of support. Letter from Mrs Galvin
5th February 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Well done for making it to the end of another week! Lock down isn't easy and the longer it goes on the harder it is for everyone to keep going and keep the sunny side out. We look forward to the day when we can welcome your children back in the door of Scoil Mhuire. Until then, we are working hard to stay connected to you and to give your child/children the best remote learning experience we can possibly offer. I hope your child/children are enjoying connecting with their classmates, teachers and SNAs on Zoom. I have seen quite a lot of the beautiful and careful work they have produced on Seesaw and I am very impressed with the quality of their work. Well done to you for supporting your child/children at home so well. You are all doing a lot better job than you think so enjoy a well earned rest this weekend!
To help us to continue to support your child in the best way possible, I would be grateful if you could take a moment to fill out the short questionnaire on the link below.
We miss your children, and we miss meeting you in the classrooms, yards and on the side lines of pitches. One day soon, please God, that will happen again.
Wishing you a safe and peaceful weekend where you all get a much needed rest.
Kind regards,

School Books Collection
Friday 8th January 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians,
On December 22nd we sent home schoolbooks and copies with children but a number of children were absent. If your child was absent and has not got their books at home you can collect them outside the school between 1pm and 2pm this Friday, January 8th. Please approach the school with due care as icy conditions are prevalent in Co.Kildare at the moment. Please also wear a mask and maintain social distancing as you wait to collect your child's books to ensure safety for everyone.
We, in Scoil Mhuire, are committed to ensuring your child avails of a high quality education even in lockdown. I will be in contact with you over the next few days to share our plans with you about how we will do this. In the meantime if you have any worries or concerns we can be contacted on 087 1224820 during regular school hours.

As part of Science Week, we all made our own catapults. In this video. Jonah and Andrew explain how their catapults work.
Then we had a competition to see which pair of children could catch the most aluminium balls fired from their catapult. The winners were Cole and Tadhg.
Caoimhe won the challenge for who could fire an aluminium ball the furthest from their catapult.
Air pressure experiment
We did an interesting experiment about air pressure during science week. This experiment looks like a magic trick.
Even though a glass of water is turned upside down, the water inside it does not spill out.
Air has pressure. There is loads of air all around the glass which acts like a force pushing in all directions and this keeps the card on the open end of the glass in place.
Also there is hardly any air inside the glass because it is full of water. That means there is no air pressure to push the card downwards. So the card stays in place and the water remains in the glass.

Covid 19 Memories
At the beginning of the school year, we designed posters to capture our memories of the 2020 Lockdown.
Thanks to Hilary for laminating them for us.
We will keep them as souvenirs of this historic time.
Many of the posters have important messages:
All feelings are ok.
Everything we need is inside us.
It`s good to look back and then move forward.

TAKE TIME FOR TEETH
Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic the Dental services in Kildare are restricted. The usual visits to schools cannot happen this year but it is still very important to look after your oral health by maintaining a healthy diet and implementing an effective oral hygiene routine.

If you are concerned about your child’s teeth or would like further advice, please contact the Vista Dental Office, 045 920868.
- Always brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and at bedtime for 2-3 minutes.
- A soft/medium toothbrush is recommended.
- Use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. (At least 1000 ppm fluoride).
- After brushing, spit out toothpaste but do not rinse.
- Change your toothbrush when the bristles are worn or every season.
- The frequency of sugar causes damage to teeth. Sugar should be kept to mealtimes only.
- Healthy snack options include fresh fruit, plain popcorn, plain yogurt, and raw vegetables such as carrots, celery, cheese, pitta bread, crackers and sandwiches.
- Unflavoured milk and water are the only two drinks that are safe for your teeth.

Show Racism the Red Card
From the 8th of October until 22nd of October our school took part in the FAI campaign which is aimed at getting rid of racism. The classes watched a video about other students speaking about racism and then made their own posters about the issue. Well done to all the pupils for taking part and their efforts in making the posters.

Successful Cross Country Athletics Event in Wicklow
Opening of our New school running track!
Scoil Mhuire Senior marked European Schools Sports Day, September 27th, with the opening of our new all-weather running track. The 400m track runs along the perimeter of our two excellent sports fields. It will facilitate the physical fitness development of all children in the school by enabling them to walk, jog and run in all weather conditions.
While we are well known for our many successes in Gaelic football, hurling, soccer, basketball and spikeball we also have a very successful history in athletics. The boys team won Gold in the Kildare Cumann na mBunscol Cross Country Championship for the last two years and Silver in the 2018 South Dublin Cross Country Championships against a highly competitive field. The Scoil Mhuire girls’ team won Silver in Kildare in 2018. While the school is proud of these many successes the primary focus in Scoil Mhuire Senior is not on winning but on inclusivity and the personal physical development of each child at their own pace.
Scoil Mhuire Senior achieved an Active Schools Flag in 2017 and is in the process of renewing it. This initiative promotes inclusive physical activity throughout the school day. Every child in the school completes a Daily Mile and can now do so on a fabulous running track. Scoil Mhuire Senior takes running seriously and fitness levels, concentration in class and well-being have improved as a result. The children are more positive, focused and happy while recognising that physical activity is fun. Principal Mr Gerry King worked closely with John Killeen of Killeen Civil Engineering in the creation of this superb running track which will benefit the children of Scoil Mhuire Senior for many generations to come.

World Book Day - March 7 th 2019
Book Tasting
Thursday was World Book Day and we celebrated by hosting a “Book Tasting” for some of our classes. Children were given a couple of minutes to “taste” a book, before writing a review to decide whether or not they would like to keep reading it. All of the books we read are available in the school library, Newbridge library, or to buy using the book tokens we got for WBD. Active School Runamuck Challenge
Approximately 320 children from the school participated in a Runamuck Challenge on the Curragh. This event was organised by the Defence Forces to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to raise funds for the Coombe Hospital. The challenge consisted of a 2.2km cross country run over 8-10 obstacles. Much fun was had by all crawling under nets, jumping hurdles, stepping through tyres and scrambling up and over grassy banks. We are very grateful to the Defence Forces for inviting us to participate and hope that it might become an annual event.

Active Schools
We are focusing on the Fundamental Movement skill of ‘Balancing’. Balance is essential for all physical development and is a prerequisite for almost every movement skill. We are practicing balancing in different ways and on different parts of our bodies as Mr. Connolly’s class are demonstrating during a Gymnastics lesson. Sometimes we balance on different parts of our body taking our body weight solely on our hands and other times we balance objects on our body and control our movement.

Green Schools Action Day
We had a fantastic fun filled day in Scoil Mhuire, Ballymany at our Travel Action Day which is part of the steps towards our fourth Green Flag. The committee organised and hosted the day which began with our WOW (Walk on Wednesday) and then every member of the school taking part in the ‘Cha Cha Slide’ dance wearing funky footwear.
The day continued in the small hall with an exhibit of ‘things that move’ which each class made: paper rockets, hover boards, paper aeroplanes, magnetic cars just to name a few. The children really enjoyed seeing how these items moved. Transport facts were displayed with photos of how transport has changed over time. The Instagram booth was a great success.
After lunch Brian McGrogan talked to all the students about the greener and healthier approach to travel to school. All the children participated in fun exercises. Prizes were given for the best class for the ‘Big Travel Challenge’ and the best funky footwear. A great day was had by all.

Active Schools Update
We have big goals for our Active school initiative for 2018. We are hoping for a happy, healthy and active new year.
Our new initiative for January is co-operative games. This means that every class will decide on a game to play every day it will mean that we will be even more active on yard than we already are. Classes have all sorts of different games on the go from ‘Sharks and Fish’ to ‘Flush the toilet’. It is great to see everybody in a class involved in the same game and having fun together whilst running around. We will all continue our circuits at small breaks too.
Our Active Schools Committee suggested that we re-examine our healthy eating policy and refresh the importance of it in all of us. All classes will be studying healthy eating in science this month and hopefully it will encourage us to ‘Eat Smart, Move More’. ‘Eat Smart, Move More’ booklets from the HSE were distributed to each child as well as food pyramids stickers. ‘A Guide for Parents’ booklet was also sent home to each family.
